President Park Geun-hye met Jose Angel Gurria, secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), to discuss measures to bolster cooperation between Korea and the international organization on April 12. The OECD secretary-general was visiting Korea to attend the seventh World Water Forum currently underway in Daegu.

Mentioning next year's 20th anniversary of Korea joining the OECD, President Park said the OECD’s policy advice was greatly helpful to Korea as both its economy and society were developing. She expressed her hope that Korea-OECD cooperation could expand further in the future. She told the OECD leader that Korea’s three-year plan for economic innovation received a favorable evaluation from the OECD last year at the G20 summit. She hoped that the OECD could cooperate and provide support so that Korea could carry out the plan without delay and become an exemplary case of development for the world.

Secretary-General Gurria responded by saying that the OECD highly values Korea's traditional cooperation with the OECD in solving international issues. He added that the OECD would spare no expense in supporting and cooperating with Korea in order to make the World Water Forum a success, as much of the water data used at the conference are from the OECD's water-related activities.

Meanwhile, President Park said that this year will be a year of great importance in the development sector, mentioning the launch of the U.N.’s Post-2015 Development Agenda. The president noted that Korea has been contributing to international discussions on development in a constructive manner, backed by its experience of transforming itself from an aid beneficiary to an aid provider in a relatively short period of time. President Park also said that she expects close cooperation so that the joint principles agreed upon through the Busan Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation pact, which was signed in 2011, can be reflected in the U.N.'s post-2015 agenda.

Secretary-General Gurria reaffirmed the OECD’s will to cooperate with Korea on the area of development. He highly valued the work combining Korea’s rural development experiences, such as the New Community Movement, or Saemaeul Undong in Korean, and the expertise of the OECD. The secretary-general also hoped that such results would contribute to the growth of developing economies, as in the future it could become a universal model for rural and urban development. He also emphasized the need to continue cooperation on issues of common interest, such as social integration, innovation and technology, an aging society, the labor market and education.
